Former LCC Player, Now Top-10 NFL Draft Prospect
When people talk of the top NFL prospects in this years’ draft, many include Kevin White in their mix of top five picks. The West Virginia wideout caught the attention of many NFL scouts during his All-American senior season with the Mountaineers. So what do Kevin White and any Valley View High School football player have in common? At one point, they both called John Henzes Stadium their home turf.
What many don’t know about the highly talented receiver is that he wasn’t always considered highly talented. Coming out of Emmaus High School of Lehigh, Pennsylvania, White wasn’t considered Division one ready, and his grades made it difficult to get into most colleges across the country. Consequently, White ended up at Lackawanna Community College in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
During his only starting season at LCC, White caught 36 passes for 535 yards and six touchdowns. "I was in the best shape and I couldn't slack off. The coaches at Lackawanna, Coach Grande, and Coach Duda, really stayed on my butt every minute. They knew what I could do. They saw the potential in me,” White said when asked about his LCC coaches. White knew he wanted nothing less than to play D1 football. His whole career has been making sure he shut up all the doubters and proved that he is capable of his dreams.
After his overly impressive season at LCC, White received scholarships from many D1 schools including Bowling Green, UMass, and Texas Tech, but ultimately decided to choose West Virginia. "What put West Virginia over the top was its coaching staff. Coach Holgorsen was real down to earth and talked to me a lot. He was at my dinner table and was always checking on me. The whole coaching staff was really cool. They talked to my family and answered a whole bunch of questions. They showed they really care," White said while explaining why he chose West Virginia.
In White’s senior year at West Virginia, he became a college star. His 1,000 yard, 10 touchdown season earned him All-American honors and a finalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award. The now top ten prospect believes he is finally proving everyone wrong, one step at a time. "My motivation comes from people who didn't think I could make it. There were people that said I couldn't play Division 1 football so I had people trying to talk me into playing Division 2. Those same guys are contacting me and telling me how surprised they are and how they knew I would make it. Get on the bandwagon, I guess." said White.
White is a determined individual who knows exactly where he came from and doesn’t hesitate to stop and thank those who have supported him. He realizes who had his back and who didn’t and strives every day to prove those who didn’t wrong. Projected to go number four in the draft this spring, White can finally shut the haters up and prove to everyone, that he is what he said he could be.
"I'm here so I guess I get to laugh at everyone who ever doubted me," –Kevin White.
